Unwinding Memories

From my window, I gaze
At dove grey skies and bleached bone birch.
My memories unwind like a skein of yarn,
Dangling scenes and songs from my wooden spool.
I hold your cracked, blue cup
As if it had been painted by Vermeer
And had held a tisane of a thousand autumns.
It was the last thing you touched.
And now I bring it to my lips.
And now I swallow.
